Berto happy to be in the hat for the Mayweather fight

Andre Berto has released a statement indicating his happiness with being one of the names linked to face pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. It is one of the more unusual names linked with Mayweather as Berto has only won three of his last six fights.

Former IBF and Welterweight champion Berto stated in a statement, “I’m happy to be in the running for this fight and am definitely up for the challenge. I know it will be a great fight if it happens.”

It seems it is a two horse race between Berto and Amir Khan, although Khan may have conceded defeat in his pursuit of the money fight. Khan took to Twitter to give a indication that Berto may have been picked as Mayweather’s next opponent tweeting, “Heard it’s Berto. Good luck to my boy Berto, he’s a good kid regardless.”

Whichever way it can be portrayed, Berto is without a doubt as surprise name that has been thrown in the hat. While between is a former world champion, it seems he has been trying to resurrect his career after his loss to Victor Ortiz in 2011. Berto has won his last two fights, beating Stephen Upsher Chambers via points and stopping Josesisto Lopez, and while no disrespect to these fighters, it seems strange that these wins would warrant a payday with Money Mayweather.

Mayweather has started training ahead of his fight, it seems that he has the upper hand on his opponent already. While both Khan and Berto are still awaiting an announcement, a thorough camp will have to be cut short seeing as there is now less than two months left to the fight. Whichever way it seems, an announcement between Mayweather and his future opponent should follow soon while both fighters mentioned will be on edge, waiting if they are destined for a big money fight with the pound-for-pound great.
