Broner to put his title on the line against Theophane

Adrien Broner is set to face Britain’s Ashley Theophane for the WBA super–lightweight title, Floyd Mayweather confirmed.

Theophane is under Mayweather Promotions and now-promoter Mayweather announced that his fighter will be facing Broner in Atlanta in January.

“My fighter Ashley is from the UK … him and Adrien Broner will fight in Atlanta,” Mayweather said the Guardian.

“We doing a big show in Atlanta at the end of January. Ashley and Adrien will be fighting for the title.”

Theophane has been on a succession of six wins following his loss to Pablo César Cano in 2013. His last outing was against Steve Upsher Chambers in September, winning via a unanimous decision.

Broner comes off a win against Russia’s Khabib Allakhverdiev in October where he won the regular version of the title. After considering the career achievements of Broner, the WBA Championships Committee in compliance with WBA Rule C. 18 promoted Broner to the status of Super Champion.

Broner has had a recent run in with The Money Team, which is Mayweather’s brand and promotional stable. It stems from Broner’s statement of “f*** The Money Team” – a statement he made last month after the BET Hip Hop awards.

Broner spoke to Hot 97 earlier in November, as reported by BoxingScene, and said his statement towards TMT was “heat of the moment”.

“Sometimes it be the heat of the moment. I just did it on TMZ, at the BET Awards. I think it was TMZ, it was something. I was already mad because I’ve been hearing the TMT boys have been saying ‘f***’ Adrien and all of that. So I came out and they got all the cameras and I’m thinking that’s all he’s gonna ask, so I’m like ‘f*** the TMT, I f** with Floyd. I could have worded that differently. And big bro actually called me about that. He was pretty upset. It’s all love though.”
