Canelo-Golovkin will have to wait.
The World Boxing Council announced the status of its middleweight division on Monday afternoon.
Upon the joint request of WBC World middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, and their respective promotional companies, Golden Boy Promotions and K2 Promotions, the WBC has issued their decision.
Canelo and Golovkin are entitled to make a voluntary defense of their titles to maximize the interest on a highly-anticipated showdown.
Following their defenses, a 15-day free negotiation period will be ordered. Those fights must be completed by May 31, 2016.
If no agreement is reached, a purse bid will be conducted under WBC rules and regulations. If a fighter is unable to fight the other in the wake of their voluntary defense, the WBC shall strip that fighter of the status of which they hold.
If that happens, the fighter who is able to fight will be named the undisputed WBC World middleweight champion.
