Cano, De La Hoya and Taishan Earn Decision Victories on Golden Boy Live card
Pablo Cesar Cano defeated Juan Carlos Abreu by majority decision on Golden Boy’s showcase card at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California airing live on Fox Sports 1. One judge scored it even 95-95 while the other two gave Cano the edge 97-93 and 96-94 respectively.
Cano (29-4-1, 21 KO’s) simply loves to fight. This was his second fight in February as he knocked out Jorge Silva in round 1 on the 7th in Mexico. At only 25 years old, Cano is a veteran who has already fought Erik Morales, Shane Mosely and Paulie Malignaggi.
Abreu (18-2, 17 KO’s) took all of Cano’s punches and managed to land a few of his own to keep Cano from stopping him.
Cano landed the heavier and more accurate shots. They each exchanged clean punches in rounds 3 and 4 but he clearly landed more effectively, especially to the body, which stopped Abreu in his tracks.
The Domican Republic fight tried to land his patented uppercut all night but Cano managed to land first and move away. Frustrated, Abreu landed a rabbit punch to the Cano’s kidney in round 6.
Cano paid him back with a right cross across the face and then a 3 punch combination punctuated with hook to the body. He stunned Abreu and may have gotten him out of there if the round went on a bit longer.
Mexican Cano walked through a lazy jab from Abreu to stun him with a left hook which made his head wobble. The two banged heads accidentally which caused a cut over Cano’s right eye. Angered, Cano chased Abreu around the ring trying to knock his head clear off his body.
Fatigued, both fighters took a spill on one another in the 8th round. Cano, however, was able to come back at Abreu and disregard the blood to continue laying it on Abreu. Cano walked through an uppercut to land his own right hook as the round ended.
Pablo Cesar Cano controlled the last two rounds and withstood right handed swats by Abreau en route the hard fought decision victory. Abreu landed one more right hand after the bell that ended the fight which nearly caused the fight to continue but fortunately both fighters were separated.
In the televised co-feature featherweight prospect Diego De La Hoya improved to 9-0,(6 KOs) with an 8 round unanimous decision victory over the tough Manuel Roman with Diego’s cousin Oscar watching from ringside.
All three judges scored it 80-72 in favor of the 20 year old De La Hoya.
Roman (17-4-3, 6 KOs), who was knocked out by Leo Santa Cruz last September on the Mayweather-Maidana II undercard, was a good opponent for De La Hoya’s development.
This is the first time De La Hoya had to go 8 rounds and he had his work cut out for him with a game Roman who did not come to lose to young De La Hoya.
De La Hoya’s blazing hand speed proved to be the difference in the fight. Roman was a step slower all night and De La Hoya made him pay with blistering combinations which bloodied Roman’s nose in round 4.
Roman refused to go away and came back at De La hoya in an entertaining sixth round which brought the crowd it its feet. Both fighters landed power shots all the way to the bell.
They slugged each other again in the eighth round as the fight was bell drew near to close out the fight. De La Hoya’s speed and movement proved to be too much for Roman.
Rounding out the televised card was the giant 7 foot heavyweight project from China, Taishan (3-0, 2KOs) continues to be a work in progress as he pounded 42 year old Roy McCrary for 4 rounds winning a unanimous decision victory 39-35, 40-34 x2
Taishan,who is trained by Buddy McGirt, ate some punches flush in the face by the 269 pound McCrary (3-3, 3 KOs). Neither big man had much use for defense in the fight.
Taishan, who came into the fight at 282 pounds showed he can take a punch as McCrary landed some haymakers in each of the first 2 rounds, but Taishan made McRary pay sending him down with a hard right hand after McCrary missed with his own lunging right. McCrary got up and Both men traded some power shots and to end the round.
Taishan would send McCrary down again in the third with a left right combination en route to the unanimous decision after the 4th round.
