After talks with WBC President Mauricio Suliaman, Danny Garcia has vacated the WBC Super Lightweight Title. Garcia had originally won the title against Erik Morales in 2012. He went on to make some great title defenses against the likes of Zab Judah, Amir Khan, and Lucas Matthysse. His last title defense was an underwhelming performance against Mauricio Herrera back in March of 2014. Since then he has had two fights and has not defended the title. His mandatory challenger, Viktor Postol, has been waiting in the wings for a chance at the title. They even had a step-aside agreement in place that Postol will take a back seat so that Garcia could take one more fight before their mandatory fight. Garcia then went on to face Lamont Peterson winning a 12-round Majority Decision.
Garcia’s victory against Peterson was supposed to set in motion a fight against Postol, with the winner of that fight being a mandatory to face Lucas Matthysse but instead Garcia will now face Paulie Malignaggi, which is a non-title bout. Garcia’s inactivity with the title forced the WBC to take action.
Now with the title vacant, the WBC has ordered Viktor Postol to take on Lucas Matthysse for the belt. Postol is 27-0 with 11 knockouts defeating Jake Giuriceo on the undercard of the Garcia/Peterson card. Matthysse is coming off of a possible “Fight of the Year” candidate with Ruslan Provodnikov. He is ranked third in the world as a super lightweight and sports a record of 37-3 with 34 knockouts.
