Trainer Peter Fury has confirmed that he has received a phone call asking for the availability of Hughie Fury (16-0-0, 8 KO’s) to face Deontay Wilder, who is the cousin of Tyson Fury. Hughie Fury is a promising prospect and is highly regarded in the UK shores.
Peter Fury took to Twitter to confirm that Wilder’s representatives had been in touch.
“Call just came in from USA asking @hughiefury to fight Wilder in 4 weeks. Getting noticed,” Fury wrote on Twitter.
He later confirmed that they would only take up the offer, should Hughie Fury have an eight-week camp. Fury wrote on Twitter, “If @hughiefury gets 8 weeks we will take it 1000%. We don’t do bottle jobs in this camp!!”
Fury competed last weekend against George Arias, beating the Brazilian via unanimous decision. Prior to that, Hughie beat Ukrainian Andriy Rudenko comfortably via a points decision, with the judges scoring the bout 92-98, 91-98 and 92-97.
Fury has represented England at amateur level, winning the gold medal in the 2012 Youth World Amateur Boxing Championships. He was the first ever British fighter to do it at super heavyweight.
Since beating Bermane Stiverne for the WBC heavyweight title in January, Wilder defeated Eric Molina in June with a ninth round stoppage.
While this opportunity has been for Hughie, Wilder has his long-term goals on unifying the division as he eyes the winner of the Wladimir Klitschko vs Tyson Fury bout.
“You’ve got one guy who has unified the division. With him, I think that would make my legacy even bigger and who I am bigger. On the other hand, you’ve got a guy who has been entertaining with his mouth and somewhat with his performances as well, but mostly with his mouth and stuff. I’ll root for him.
“I enjoy seeing both of those guys – in the ring or in person – but it’s tough. I think I win either way. I get who I want either way. I just hope they go in there with full health and strength and come out the same way,” Wilder told Behind the Gloves.
