Gennady Golovkin announces fight with Willie Monroe Jr on May 16

Gennady Golovkin took to Twitter to announce his next fight against Willie Monroe Jr., which will take place at the Forum in Inglewood, California on May 16. Golovkin wrote “Are you ready for the next big drama show? Get ready for #GolovkinMonroe on May 16th. I take on @WILLIEMONROEJR at @theforum #GGG.”

Willie Monroe Jr (19-1, 6 Ko’s) is a 27-year-old southpaw middleweight that ranked highly in the world ranking by the various boards. He is currently ranked number 2 by the WBA, number 9 by the WBC and number 5 with the WBO.

The man from Rochester has already fought this year, beating Brian Vera on Jan 16 via unanimous decision retaining his NABA middleweight title and WBO NABO middleweight strap.

Golovkin comes off this convincing win against a tough Martin Murray and while GGG is looking forward to a fight with Miguel Cotto, it seems he will have to wait further to fight the Puerto Rican.

While this may not please many fans, it seems Golovkin is genuinely struggling to land any of the big names. While calling out Cotto after the Murray win, it seems Golovkin wants to stay active while he waits for the WBC Middleweight champion.

Talking to Yahoo.com, Tom Loeffler, promoter to Golovkin said, “Gennady wants to fight and wants to be active and he wants to be in the big fights. I reached out to the Cotto camp, but I got zero response whatsoever. Gennady wants to fight three or four times a year and stay active, so Monroe made sense. He’s ranked No. 2 in the WBA and he’s got a contrasting style. He’s a slick boxer and so it should be interesting.” Loeffler said.

Cotto has not defended his WBC middleweight title after he won it from Sergio Martinez in June 2014 and recently could not come into agreement with Saul Canelo Alvarez, who has now gone onto arrange a showdown with James Kirkland.
