Giovani Segura tops Saturday bill in Tijuana

As first reported last month by Behind The Gloves, all-action flyweight Giovani Segura headlines a card this Saturday, Apr. 5, at Arena Tecate in Tijuana. The card is promoted by Zanfer and will be televised in Mexico on Box Azteca.

Segura (31-3-1, 27 KOs) opens 2014 against veteran Felipe Salguero (19-5-1, 14 KOs) in a ten round bout as he chases another world title shot. Segura closed 2013 with a win over former titleholder Hernan Marquez, and he eyes a big fight in his next bout should he win.

There are rumors that Segura could meet unbeaten Roman Gonzalez or unified champion Juan Francisco Estrada next. Both fights would be contenders for Fight of the Year.

Also on the card, unbeaten Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. (22-0-2, 14 KOs) faces his most experienced opponent to date, former title challenger Juan Alberto Rosas (38-8, 27 KOs), in a ten round bout. “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr., the son of the former world champion, is considered one of the top prospects in Mexico. Gonzalez and Segura both train at Daniel Ponce De Leon’s gym in Montebello, Calif.

Also in action, Misael Castillo (26-2, 24 KOs) faces Aaron Herrera (25-3, 17 KOs) in a ten round bout; Rogelio Jun Doliguez (18-0-2, 14 KOs) meets Francisco Gabriel Pina (12-7-4, 5 KOs) in an eight-rounder.
