Reigning IBA female middleweight champion Kali Reis will take another shot at a world title on April 16.
But that is not the only thing Reis will be preparing for. In fact, she will also be stepping into the ring on February 19.
For the first time in four years, Reis will be swinging away in front of her hometown fans for the vacant UBF middleweight title.
An opponent has yet to be selected, but a decision will be made soon.
In regards to her slated bout on April 16, the 29-year-old American, of Providence, Rhode Island, will travel overseas to the island of New Zealand, to fight fellow American, Maricela Cornejo, for the vacant WBC World female middleweight title.
In her last two fights, Reis has fought for a World championship but has fallen short in both attempts.
Last May, Reis was outclassed by the undefeated Kazakh Christina Hammer in a unanimous decision loss. And last October, dropped down to 154 pounds to challenge WBO World champion Hanna Gabriel and again, was outshined.
Now Reis is set to face a woman who does not have as much professional experience under her belt, but do not underestimate Cornejo.
In addition to boxing, Cornejo excelled at basketball, softball, and volleyball, before setting her eyes on the sweet science.
Having gone undefeated as an amateur, Cornejo now has a professional record of 4-1 with two knockouts.
As recently as last October, Cornejo has been fine-tuning her defensive capabilities at Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, perhaps the best place to learn/improve defensive technique.
Cornejo has a tendency to get hit with too many right hands and Reis, herself, has a wicked right hand. This could make a huge difference come April.
Last August, Cornejo defeated Latashia Burton to become the vacant WBC International female super middleweight champion.
We will see what she has to offer the rest of the middleweights.
