Welcome To Behind The Gloves

Kieran’s division of the year for 2015

Boxing on acid, the heavy weight division in 2015, the division of the year. Where do I start? The big boys are back in town. The central figure in the madness is one Tyson Luke Fury AKA Batman. What a pantomime.

Lead role in the plot Fury a complex and controversial character is compulsive viewing. A character which the heavy weight boxing scene has been crying out for, for a very long time. When the furious one dethroned the great Dr Steel Hammer Wladimir Klitschko he blew the heavy division wide open. All of a sudden there were multiple champions three presently and amazingly Klitschko is not one of them.

Dusseldorf Germany was certainly the heavyweight highlight of the year as the 6’9-inch giant waltzed and crushed Dr Steel Hammer physically after previously battering him mentally in the build up to the fight. Then he sang when the job had been complete and a number had been well and truly done on Wladimir. Team Klitschko ought to watch the film ‘Snatch’ before the rematch and trying to pull any stunts against those traveller boys. If the fight actually happens. If it does I feel the result will be similar and most likely even more conclusive. For this reason I don’t think it will.

“Lets go champ!”. Enter the stage Shannon ‘The Cannon’ Briggs who was also a casualty of the Fury victory. Who is he supposed to chase around now? Gate crashing the Fury gym in Bolton might be met with a different response than Klitschko’s. The Cannon may encounter John Fury, ‘nuff said’! The most memorable of The Cannons exchanges with Klitschko has to be when he knocked him of his paddle board with his motor boat as Wlad was enjoying a peaceful day out in the Florida water. Briggs explained later how “he nearly crapped himself”.

Enter the fray the man in the mask. The other current world heavy weight champ Deontay ‘The Bronze Bomber’ Wilder. A 19-year-old kid from the west side of Tuscaloosa drops out of college after learning he was about to become a father. That child would later be diagnosed with spina bifida, a crippling disease typically accompanied by massive medical bills.

So what does the 19-year-old do? He picks up a pair of boxing gloves and on the 17th of January 2015 becomes the WBC Heavyweight Champion of the world. He would go on to defend his title two more times over the year. We are all wetting our mouths at the prospect of a Fury Vs Wilder build up, press conferences and of course a fight. Madness will no doubt ensue as these two massive men and personalities collide.

On top of this we have one of the most hyped and hotly tipped prospects since a young Mike Tyson came on the scene. Team GB’s Olympic gold champion and frightening physical specimen Anthony ‘AJ’ Joshua. He has been destroying everything in his path in devastating fashion and we saw him five times in 2015 knocking anyone unfortunate enough to be placed in ring with him out. Everything looked so easy and a quick path to the top looked certain, all until. ‘The Body Snatcher’ AKA Dillian Whyte, I will definitely not say anything negative about Whyte. Born in Jamaica raised in Brixton a martial arts expert and 16-0 professional record, he finds people.

That perfect record stood until AJ brutally knocked him out in the 7th round. However, before this he gave an excellent account of himself and had Joshua in big trouble in the third. Without a shoulder injury who knows what may have happened but it looks like he could have a big part to play in the heavyweight divisions future. Brilliantly beef has already erupted between him and Dereck Chisora, how much fun that is going to be, a promoters dream if they can make the fight happen.

David Price was once again on the wrong end of an anabolic steroid of sorts fuelled beat down. This time at the hands of Germanys Erkan Teper. Previously it was Tony ‘The Tiger’ Thompson who did the damage then failed the test. Big Tony has a lot to answer for, this defeat basically ruined Prices career, destroyed his confidence and caused Prices manager Frank Maloney to have a sex change. Not to mention what he indicated he was going to do to his wife to celebrate.

Then there are other pretenders to the throne, they are now queuing up in this buzzing and exciting division. Who would have thought Prince Charles would ever lace them up!? Charles Martin, ever hear of him? Is now IBF champion. Lucas Browne is making noise. Hughie Fury my dark horse and prediction as a future champion is developing nicely. Glazkov, Joseph Parker, Povetkin, Ortiz, The Hayemaker no less is back. What a line up. Deontay Wilder said it best “no-one is safe”.
