Welcome To Behind The Gloves

Klitschko-Fury gloves row emerges days before heavyweight showdown

A row has emerged over the gloves that are to be used for Saturday’s world title fight between heavyweight ruler Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury. The Ukrainian, who holds the WBA Super, WBO and IBF belts has chosen Paffen gloves for the fight, however Fury has found them uncomfortable to train with.

Another pair has been sent to Fury, but he hasn’t received them yet from the manufacturer, angering the British challenger.

The undefeated Fury claims that his main problem with the gloves is over the size of the thumb on the gloves, a claim also confirmed by his trainer and uncle Peter in today’s press conference in Germany.

Both camps insist the fight will still go ahead and the matter will be resolved, so it won’t overshadow their bout in Dusseldorf. It did however prove to be an interesting topic of conversation at the press conference.

Bernd Boente, Klitschko’s manager assured those in attendance that Fury’s gloves would arrive in time, however Fury’s manager Mick Hennessy hit back and insisted that the challenger needs them as soon as possible.

“The brand both teams agreed on contractually is Paffen Sport. That’s well reputed glove company and the gloves were sent to Team Fury to test them in training and suddenly after five weeks, not such a long time ago, we heard they are not ok,” said Boente to Sky Sports.

“Then I gave Mick Hennesey, Tyson’s promoter, the contact of that company and after a week he called him. After a week, again, we’re talking of six precious weeks we lost.

Now the change is they want to be to the glove have to be done, fine for us, but the problem is that the timing is so tight that it is not 100 percent that they can make it in time.

So let’s hope – the decision is not made by us, it is not our fault, it’s their fault because I think a professional should know after probably one or two training sessions if the glove is ok or not,” said Boente.

Should the debate be settled, Klitschko and Fury’s clash will be shown live on Sky Sports Box Office from Dusseldorf, where Fury puts him unblemished record on the line to challenge for Klitschko’s WBA Super, WBO and IBF heavyweight crowns.
