Jessie Magdaleno remained undefeated in Phoenix on Saturday with a first-round knockout of Vergel Nebran in a UniMas-televised main event at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.
Magdanelo (22-0, 16 KO’s) dropped Nebran (14-10-1) with a vicious left hook when the Filipino and Manny Pacquiao look-alike was trapped on the ropes. While Nebran got up, he was still far away from making it out of the round.
Magdanelo came back for dessert and landed a series of body punches which floored Nebran for good at 2:22 of the opening round.
After winning 15 of his first 19 professional bouts by knockout, Magdaleno went the distance with Erik Ruiz and Raul Hirales dating back to August 2014. He sent a clear message on Saturday that he’s fully capable of knocking out any fighter.
“I’m ready now [for a world title opportunity],” Magdaleno said. “We train hard, and we get ready for these fights. I’m always ready. Now it’s time to step up and get those big shots.”
“I have full confidence in myself, and I know my ability and what I can do in the ring. I’m ready for whoever; whoever comes at me, whoever wants to give up their title, I’m ready.
“I’m looking at a Carl Frampton, Scott Quigg, or maybe [Guillermo] Rigondeaux.”
Francisco de Vaca threw away his boxing style to put on an exciting brawl for the fans against Ricardo Proana in a vigorous affair. De Vaca won a unanimous decision on two scores of 58-56 and a 59-55 score to improve to 13-0 with four knockouts.
Victor Castro improved to 16-0 with seven knockouts with a majority decision over a 4-9-3 Victor Raul Capaceta.
It wasn’t a very impressive performance from Castro who at times, was simply overwhelmed from the constant pressure exerted by Capaceta. Castro may have won, but the crowd responded with reverberating boos.
Local favorite Trevor McCumby fought back after being knocked down by West Virginia’s Dustin Echard to win a unanimous decision with three scores of 78-73.
McCumby worked the distance effectively for most of the fight, landing with counter right hands to the head of Echard in the first round.
A series of punches late in the third round rattled McCumby and Echard jumped on the opportunity.
The Chicago native that now calls Glendale, Arizona home took a knee, but fought a smart fight the rest of the way to earn the win, and remained undefeated.
