Former two-division world champion Marcos Maidana has insinuated that he is likely to retire from boxing instead of making a comeback.
After defeating Adrien Broner to claim the WBA World welterweight crown in December 2013, Maidana lost two high-profile bouts to Floyd Mayweather Jr. the following year and has been out of the sport ever since.
His weight gain during his inactivity was much-publicized, and it was not until three and half a months ago when photos surfaced of Maidana cycling in his native country of Argentina to stay in shape.
In a recent interview with Deportemas of Radio Palermo, it appears the process of dropping what was a rumored high of 200-pounds back to a fighting condition weight, has proved to be too much for Maidana.
“In boxing, I think I turned my cycle. I feel very well, and I’m not even thinking of boxing,” Maidana said. “All this time off helped me a lot. I still have not made a decision, but I think I did everything I could in boxing.”
After making over $6 million fighting Mayweather over the course of a year, boxing is the last thing on Maidana’s mind, and most of his family is content with him not fighting again.
“I had good fights in the past and had very good results,” he added. “My mother, my wife, and my sisters do not want me to fight again, but my father asked me to fight one more time. I don’t know if I am going to return and fight again.”
