Matthysse-Herrera close to being finalized for co-feature on Canelo-Khan

Argentine slugger Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse (37-4, 34 KO’s) looks to make a huge return as the co-feature bout for the upcoming Canelo-Khan HBO PPV on May 7th at the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas. His opponent at this time seems to be the very crafty Mexican-American Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (22-5, 7 KO’s).

Matthysse’s last bout was a KO loss to Viktor Postol last October, in the process he lost his WBC Junior Welterweight world title. While Herrera’s last fight was a victory against Henry Lundy back in July, also taking place at 140. However, this contest seems likely to take place at the 147 limit.

According to the Boxingscene, Herrera has already agreed to the terms reportedly saying, “We were talking last week and we reached an agreement, I just hope I get the contract to sign. I think [I’ll get it] this week or maybe next week”.

On the reported 147 weight for this fight, Herrera said “I’m confident that I’ll be fine at 147 pounds. It will be a great fight”.

Therefore at this time the ball seems to be Matthysse’s court and the fight is up to him. Herrera has notable wins over Ruslan Provodnikov, Lundy and Johan Perez. He also has a controversial loss to Danny Garcia, the current WBC welterweight champion, where many fans and boxing analysts saw a clear Herrera win.Overall it’s a good matchup for both Matthysse and Herrera, many would also see this as a potential crossroads fight. The winner would be left in a great position for some big fights at 147, while the loser would have to go back to the drawing board.
