Gonzales vs Oosthuizen Results

The bout between Brandon Gonzales (17-0-1 10 KOs) and Thomas Oosthuizen (21-0-2 13 KOs) was ruled a split draw. The scores were 98-92 Gonzales, 96-94 Oosthuizen, and 95-95.

Throughout the first five rounds of the fight, Gonzales would land huge straights and quick hooks with precision while the South African had no answer.

The last five rounds were somewhat of a different story. The rounds would get closer as the fight continued, including a few moments where Oosthuizen would answer the undefeated Gonzales back with combinations.

In the end, the judges ruled it a split decision draw leaving their records virtually untouched.

Golovkin vs Macklin Results

Gennady Golovkin extends his undefeated record to 27-0 and 24 KOs after knocking out Matthew Macklin (29-5 20 KOs) at 1:22 of the third round of the HBO Boxing After Dark main event with a vicious left hook to the body that left Macklin writhing in pain.

In the first round, Golovkin’s strategy seemed clear as he was applying pressure and would not let Macklin settle in. At the end of the first GGG landed a heavy right hand followed by a left on the head of the Englishman that sent him to the ropes as round 1 went to a close.

Round 2 Golovkin’s body shots were more prevalent, which was a sign of things to come. Round 3 showed Macklin fighting valiantly trying to stay in the fight while having a cut above his left eye, until he had him against the ropes and landed the body shot that would end the fight.

Golovkin retains his WBA and IBO Middleweight championships and could possibly looking for a bout with the current WBC Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

Gavin Rees vs Anthony Crolla Results

Gavin_rees_Anthony_crolla_UK

Anthony Crolla wins a 12 round majority decision over Welsh fighter Gavin Rees, earning him a shot at WBO Lightweight Champion Ricky Burns.

Early on in the fight, Rees was the aggressor being the busier fighter and providing more activity than Crolla in rounds 1 and 2.

Round 3, Crolla showed some life and began utilizing his jab landing an uppercut and a couple of overhand rights that woke up the crowd who were there in favor of the Manchester native.

In round 4, a clash of heads gave Rees a cut over his left eye, but did not slow down the Welshman as he was firmly back on the offensive and showing defense with his head movement.

Round 9 provided the best round of the fight as the two fighters went toe to toe against the ropes with Crolla coming off the better man in that late round exchange.

As the fight came down to the wire, with the building reacting to every hook Anthony Crolla threw whether it hit or missed sent the hometown crowd happy. The fighters embraced at the end of the 12th round.

The judges scored the fight (115-113, 115-115, 116-113).

After the fight, Rees and trainer Gary Lockett in an interview felt that Anthony Crolla benefited from a hometown decision. Meanwhile, Ricky Burns on SkySports implies that when ever his fight with Crolla takes place that he should be not much of a problem.

Floyd Mayweather or Canelo Alvarez: Who will be “The One”?

Mayweather-vs-Canelo_TheOne

Who will be “THE ONE”?

Soon all questions will be answered in the mega bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. Some fans question Alvarez’s timing for taking this huge fight, and some question his overall experience. Mayweather on the other hand has been questioned by critics throughout his career from every aspect including his technical defensive scheme to the opponent’s he chooses to fight next. Many would even argue Floyd’s fighting style to be “less entertaining” in comparison to many of other boxer’s. In addition, Mayweather’s age may play a factor at some point in the near future but that’s yet to be seen. Regardless, all these questions have attracted the die hard boxing fans with the tickets selling out in less than 24 hours from the time of announcement. It’s also being estimated that it can top the Mayweather vs. De la Jolla 2007 PPV record attendance.

Boxing enthusiasts in general seem to forget Saul “Canelo” Alvarez started boxing at the young age of 13. Alvarez had 20 amateur bouts before turning Pro at the age of 15. Now, at 22 years young Alvarez has acquired a stout (43-0-1) record with 30 wins coming by way of knockout. Alvarez impressively is the current WBC, WBA, and Ring Magazine Light Middle Weight Champion. The power that this young slugger, Canelo, possesses presents a challenge for any fighter that steps in the ring opposite of him.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr., is 14 years elder at the age of 36, and continues getting checks in the win column and as well as his bank account. Effective, regardless of criticism,  Floyd still has sleek superior defense and crisp speedy combos. Which have helped “Money” acquire an astounding (44-0) record with 26 wins coming by way of knockout. What’s more impressive is Mayweather’s ability to maintain dominance in 5 weight classes and thus is arguably the best pound for pound fighter in boxing history. Mayweather is the WBC Welterweight Champion and the WBA Super Welterweight Champion. “It will be the best vs. the best” said Floyd Mayweather at the “The One” New York Press Conference held June 24th in Times Square.

The bell rings on September 14, 2013 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Until then, only words of speculation and assumption can be said for each of the fighters. All of their hard work, dedication, and overall game planning for this fight will be showcased; Fighting at the catch weight of 152 lbs, both fighters should be well prepared and ready for a championship battle. The titles on the line will be Alvarez’s WBC & The Ring Light Middleweight titles, and Mayweather’s WBA Super- Light Middleweight Title.

Win or Lose both fighters have a long list of future potential super match ups like Devon Alexander, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Lucas Matthysse all being rumored to be future match-ups. Of course, depending on who come’s out as “the one.”

golovkin-vs-macklin PIC BTG

Fire works should spark the middleweight division when Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Matthew “Tipperary Tornado” Macklin face off tonight at Foxwood Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Each fighter at the weigh-ins looked in great shape with both men weighing in at an even 159 pounds.

Golovkin holds a highly notable (26-0) record with 23 KO’s.

Matthew Macklin some believe will be Golovkin’s toughest challenge to date. Macklin showed he is worthy after battling 12 rounds with Felix Sturm (28-3) to lose a controversial split decision. Macklin showed his toughness in his loss to Sergio Martinez fighting 11 rounds and notching a knock down on the champ. In his last win over Joachim Alcine (29-4) came with a huge knockout in the 1st round. Macklin owns a striking record of his own at (29-4) with 20 KO’s.

Which man will come out on top? We will have to wait until the smoke settles. Tonight both Golovkin and Macklin put there impressive records on the line, which you can catch 9pm PST on HBO. Both men pose a threat to one another with the WBA and IBO middle weight belts on the line. In addition with a chance to be mentioned in future match ups with the elite in the entire middleweight division. Rumored are Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin and J’Leon Love to name a few.

Ishe Smith’s First Title Defense Postponed

Ishe_smith_title_defense_post_poned

Ishe Smith’s first scheduled defense as the IBF 154lb champion has been postponed due to an eye injury. Ishe Smith (25-5 11 KOs) confirmed the postponement via a Facebook post to his fans:

“Fans,

I suffered an injury today, a minor set back in my preparation to face-off against Molina. I want to make sure I am properly prepared and in the best form possible to fight him. Not only does he deserve to fight me at my best, but also my family, friends and training team deserve to have me fight at 100% It’s very hard to postpone after we have had such a great camp, but the sport of boxing and the fans deserve to watch Molina and I fight at our peak fitness levels, and I just can’t provide that with the untimely injury. With that said I will be postponing our July 19th fight in order to heal from a cut on my eye. Stay tuned to my twitter account and I will post a picture of the injury in a few days. Thank you for all your support, today and always. God Bless You all.”

He was scheduled to defend the IBF title he won from Cornelius “K9″ Bundrage and face his mandatory challenger, Carlos Amado Molina (21-5-2 6 KOs), who is coming off a one-sided victory over Cory Spinks this past February in an IBF title eliminator.

Apparently Smith needed 6 stitches for his injury which requires him to remain out of the ring for 4-6 weeks. He had already been in camp 2 months in preparation for his fight against Molina getting in sparring work from Luis “Cuba”Arias and DonYil Livingston. No word yet on when this fight can take place.

J’Leon Love Hearing: Suspension, Fine, Fight Ruled “No Contest”

J'Leon_Love_No_Contest

On the eve of his fight against Gabriel Rosado on the Mayweather/Guerrero undercard, J’Leon Love weighed on the scales at 161.5lbs, 1.5lbs over the middleweight limit after a lengthy delay. The following night he would go on to win a controversial split decision victory. While the boxing community was swarming via twitter on who won or lost the fight, the background of it all goes much deeper for Love.

On March 26, about a month before the fight, Love’s brother Gerard Bernard Love was shot and killed back at his hometown in Detroit. That tragic news put a strain on Love, as well as his training camp in preparation for his May 4th showdown.

Almost two weeks after his win, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) announced Love has tested positive for a banned substance. The substance in question is a diuretic called Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). It is used mainly to treat kidney stones, heart congestion, and high blood pressure to name a few. The side effects of the diuretic are mostly dire, these include nausea, numbness, and stomach pain. So come fight night, this caused more harm to himself than to his opponent.

Love has accepted full responsibility over the incident saying “I’m in control of what goes in my body” and understanding that the diuretic could have killed him. Love had to make weight in time for the fight to go forward and earn a pay day. With the untimely passing of his brother, Love is supporting his brother’s nine children

He’s cited at the hearing that he did not know the diuretic was a banned substance and he would never do anything to knowingly hurt himself or his career. Love’s strength and conditioning coach, Bob Ware gave him the pill after realizing that he may not make weight in time. Love told the commission that he is no longer working with Ware.

The hearing with the NSAC ruled that J’Leon Love would be suspended 6 months along with a $10,000 fine. The split decision victory over Rosado would be overturned and is now ruled a “no contest”.

J’Leon Love’s record would go back to 15-0 and Rosado back to 21-6.

Alfredo Angulo releases his first statement since being defeated by Erislandy Lara!

alfredo-angulo-eye

Los Angeles, CA (June 12) – “I want to thank all of my fans for their support in the wake of my eye injury this past weekend. I have undergone various medical examinations which I am glad to report revealed no broken bones. California State Athletic Commission physician Dr. Pearlman Hicks has informed me that I only suffered a contusion and my eye specialist thankfully sees no permanent injury to my eye.

I want to thank all of you for the love and support you have given me the past few days. I would also like to congratulate Erislandy Lara on a great fight. I’m sad that I disappointed all my fans by not giving them an “El Perro” victory as I truly believe I was on the verge of knocking Lara down for the third time and winning the fight. The sharp pain of his thumb in my eye caused me to turn my back out of reflex and I could not see out of my left eye. I accept the decision made by the referee to stop the fight and look forward to getting back in the ring in the future. I will be back to give you a better show in my next fight.”

-Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo
