Carlos Takam earns unanimous decision over Tony Thompson

France-based heavyweight Carlos Takam just put his name amongst pretty good company as he earned a unanimous decision over tough American contender Tony Thompson in his native France on Friday night.

Takam becomes only the third fighter to beat Thompson over the past decade–the other two being reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko (twice) and top contender Kubrat Pulev.

Takam overwhelmed Thompson with pressure in the early rounds, throwing a limitless volume of puncher that had Thompson on the ropes for much of the early part of the fight. As Takam gassed in the middle rounds, Thompson’s work began to shine a bit more. Takam got his second wind but open scoring allowed him to coast in the final few rounds of what was an exciting but sometimes sloppy heavyweight bout.

Scores weren’t announced but Takam was ahead by four and five points on the cards through eight rounds.
