Does Floyd Mayweather face Amir Khan without a title or will he be forced to face Alexander?
While news of Floyd Mayweather Jr., defeating Saul Alvarez just last month in record breaking fashion, are just settling, already there are talks of Mayweather’s next opponent all over social media and the internet.
Though rumors have it that Amir Khan will be taking on Floyd next in May 2014, it has still yet to be confirmed. In fact, I had the chance of finding out whether this is true or not and Khan’s camp made it very clear: “Nothing is finalized.”
So why are the rumors getting louder and louder? Well it’s pretty clear that Amir Khan tends to be in many of boxing conversations because he tends to be the guy who want’s to fight everyone. Though Khan has seemed to get a lot of backlash for mentioning there mere name of Floyd Mayweather, one thing is for certain: It’s going to happen in 2014.
In my opinion, I can foresee Mayweather fighting again in February. My inside source has said to me prior to the Canelo fight, that if Mayweather defeats Canelo, he’d like to remain active by fighting again in February. Many boxing fans dismiss the idea with the fact that Floyd likes to fight on Mexican holidays but one thing they aren’t paying attention too is none of Floyd’s matchable opponents are Mexican. If I had to guess, I’d say Khan February, and a Latin fighter like Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse or even a rematch with Miguel Cotto (depending on the outcome on Oct 5th) in May.
Again, just my opinion.
Why am I certain it’s going to happen? Well, because at this point Khan is the only opponent with a large enough name to deliver what Showtime/PPV need. Though there are more credible fighters Mayweather should face who hold titles, it will always boil down to who can be a moneymaker. And we all know what Floyd’s middle name is. However, I do have a hard time believing Mayweather will face Khan without a title, which is probably why Khan’s camp hasn’t officially made up their mind as to whether Amir will face Devon Alexander or not. Many are thinking it may be “too risky” for Khan to face, and possibly be defeated, by Alexander and both Golden Boy and Mayweather Promotions, will lose their next big payday. So it’s a toss up; does Khan stay out of the ring and focus on training in hopes Floyd want’s to fight him or does he get in the ring, challenge Devon Alexander for his title and hope he can walk away victorious?
To be fair, I’d like to see this matchup. It’s definitely an entertaining idea of seeing speed vs. speed. But Khan doesn’t hold favor in this fight, since he’s constantly being ridiculed on his chin and his ability to take a power shot. But Team Khan feel pretty confident that Amir has the speed and fast legs to give Mayweather serious trouble in the ring. But does “trouble” mean a victory?
Though, it’s left to remain seen, I can pretty much assure that we will see a Khan vs. Mayweather at some point before Floyd retires. But until then, Mayweather has 4 more fights under his ShowTime contract. Will Khan be one of them? I think so.
