Eddie Hearn doubts Mayweather wants Amir Khan fight; wants to make Brook vs Khan fight next year

Eddie Hearn expressed his doubts that Floyd Mayweather would want to face Amir Khan next, as Khan produced a masterclass of boxing on Saturday night, beating former three time champion Devon Alexander comfortably at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

Speaking after the fight to IFL TV, Hearn stated that Khan’s style of fighting would have worried Mayweather before the Alexander fight, and after his high quality performance on Saturday night he anticipates that Mayweather will avoid Khan.

“Like I said you need a certain type of style to beat Amir and if you have not it then you can’t beat him and I’m not sure that Floyd has got the right style therefore even before tonight Mayweather was not going to fight Amir Khan and I think after that performance, he’s probably more likely not to fight Amir Khan because it’s not quite big enough to warrant the risk i.e. does the same kind of pay per-view buys or a Maidana or someone like that. If it did a couple of million pay-per-view buys then I believe Mayweather would fight him” Hearn told IFL TV.

Hearn, as well as a majority of the British boxing fans, are looking towards a British super-fight between Amir Khan vs Kell Brook clash in 2015. The boxing promoter stated that the Brook bout is a must fight for Khan if his Mayweather plans fail to materialize.

“So what I’m getting to is that before tonight I was quite confident that Mayweather wouldn’t fight Khan, and after tonight I’m even more confident that Mayweather won’t fight Khan and if Mayweather does not fight Khan then Khan has to fight Brook.”

While the boxing world would like to see the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao, the complexity of making this fight makes it very uncertain whether it will ever take place. Khan will undoubtedly be keeping his eye on the situation closely and hoping that it fails to materialize and will look to capitalize on the chance.

A fight with Brook with the IBF title on the line would be a big fight none the less. The chance to headline the eighty thousand capacity Wembley Stadium, to end the long rivalry between the two and fight for a world title would be a good starting incentive to draw both fighters to that fight. The purse for both fighters could have the potential to provide both men with their biggest paydays in boxing.

The pay-per-view sales would go through the roof as the fight has the potential to outdo the Froch vs Groves 2 bout, which sold around 900,000 at £16.95, giving a UK income of just over £15m.

Whichever way it pans out, with Brook being IBF Welterweight champion and with Khan looking very comfortable and a more complete fighter at 147lbs and under the tutelage of Virgil Hunter, this fight will have to happen soon as it will be one of the biggest fights seen in British boxing in recent times.
