Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. about To Explode on the Boxing Scene

Last night, October 14, 2013 the future of boxing was on display at the Golden Boy Promotions Monday Night Fights on FOX sports 1. The future of the elite boxing class, the surge of young, hungry and talented prospects is looming. One that sticks out is “The Truth.”

2012 U.S. Olympic southpaw, Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr., (9-0) with 7 KO’s, is a 23-year old prospect that should be on every body’s radar at 147 pounds. The combination of his amateur career and his young successful professional career, gives Spence genuine versatility and dynamics. The young man from Dallas, Texas has this humble hard working demeanor about him, that leads me to believe Errol Spence Jr. will be a name to remember come fight night.

Spence trains out of the heralded Mayweather Boxing Club where he spars with elite boxers such as Floyd Mayweather and Adrien Broner. Michael Hunter was quoted saying, “(Spence) caught Adrien Broner with a good shot,” and rumor has it that Spence gave Mayweather a black eye during another sparring session.

“The Truth” shinned bright in his previous two bouts with Cordova and Tavera. Spence undoubtedly revealed he was on a completely different level in a dominating single punch body KO win over Eddie Cordova (4-4).  Using his dynamic arsenal, Spence went on to dismantle his next opponent, Jesus Tavera, via 1st round TKO.

Last night, Spence went up that ladder multiple steps to face tough, rising and unbeaten, Emanuel Lartey (15-1) 7 KO’s, in an 8 rounder.  Although Lartey came in with almost double the professional matches as Spence, the precision, power and over all skill set was immediately evident, in Spence’s is favor.

To Lartey’s credit he stayed in the fight and late in the 7th round he connected with an over hand right that caught Spence’s attention. In final round Lartey came out swinging for a KO while Spence stood his ground and used his jab to hold off Lartey to victory. Earning Spence the unanimous decision, the bout was scored 79-73 by all three judges.

Although it wasn’t the knockout Spence was becoming accustomed too, he definitely belonged. I believe Spence did the right thing in moving up in competition and will only gain from going the full 8 rounds. Spence has a wide muscular frame and looks like he can go up in weight at some point or another. He punches hard enough that’s for sure. I am excited to see what is in store for Spence’s bright future. Who would you like to see Errol Spence Jr., across the ring from?
