Five mega-fights we may see in 2015
Five mega-fights we may see in 2015
2014 has been a topsy turvy year for boxing. While we have had many cracking fights, there’s have been many fight that the fight fans have wanted to see, yet these have failed to materialize. We at Behind the Gloves look at super fights that the fans may get to see in 2015.
Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao
After years of paper talk and speculation, 2015 could have a legitimate chance of this super-fight taking place. Both men have taunted each other via social media and Pacquiao went that one step further, mocking that Mayweather had accepted his challenge in an advertisement that he carried out for Foot Locker.
Both men have been on top of the welterweight division for a number of years and both have talked about the desire to make this fight happen although the talks seem to be going through the rigmarole and complexity that this super-fight demands.
Speed vs tactical nous would be a good fight to watch. With the winner having the chance to elevate and possibly finalize his legacy, and with Mayweather ‘s much talked about unbeaten record on the line, it would be one fight that would have the general public and the “hardcore” fans all tuned in together. One fight that everyone associated with boxing wants to see be made.
Miguel Cotto vs Saul Alvarez
While it seems that Canelo Alvarez has signed his side of the fight, it still awaits confirmation from Cotto’s camp. Miguel Cotto needs no introduction as he has a healthy resume fighting boxers such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, Antonio Margarito, Shane Moseley, Manny Pacquiao and Sergio Martinez to name a few.
Both men have a similar fighting style. They possess intelligent aggression while owning good footwork. They both have nous of coming in and out of range and using their jab effectively so this fight will see a similar fighting style collide in the squared circle. A young warrior vs. a veteran in the ring would make for a great and intriguing fight.
With the fight possibly on Cinco de Mayo, this fight would not need much build. It has it all with the exciting fighting style and fan bases both fighters own.
Gennady Golovkin vs the Miguel Cotto
Gennady Golovkin has made a name for himself in recent times. A combination of heavy punching power, combination punches, immense footwork and generating power shots from awkward angles makes him one of the feared fighters Middleweight’s on the planet.
Golovkin is looking forward to a Cotto fight, calling him out in his last two fights. There has been no such noise from the Cotto camp although Triple G is the WBC interim champion and with Cotto being the WBC champion, it has it all for both men to collide into each other’s path.
“Right now, I’m the WBC interim [middleweight champion,” Golovkin said via IFL TV. “Miguel Cotto, he’s the WBC regular [champion]. I think it’s a very close situation for us. It’s a very important time for us now.”
With Golovkin firstly having his eyes set on his next fight against Martin Murray, in which he is the favourite, he will keep his eyes on the progression of Cotto vs Canelo closely.
Leo Santa Cruz vs Guillermo Rigondeaux
One of the most awkward fighters in the planet, Rigondeaux has had some hard luck in the past. While remaining unbeaten in fourteen fights, his perfected hit-and-not-be-hit style, while not being everyone’s cup of tea, has been effective in his pursuit to conquer super bantamweight division. His fighting style may not be very attractive and therefore affects the high exposure in boxing he deserves. He is the epitome of a high-risk-low-reward fighter.
Santa Cruz has not hidden his desire for this fight and while he has not fought the higher level opponents in the division in recent times, he is determined to make this fight happen. He spoke to Fight Hub TV in September stating “We’re going to be pushing for that fight, pushing and pushing until they make it happen.”
While he is named to fight on the undercard of Bermane Stiverne vs Deontay Wilder fight in Las Vegas on January 17, and with the Cuban fighting on New Years Eve against Hisashi Amagasa, one will hope that the Santa Cruz vs Rigondeaux fight can be made in mid/late 2015.
Carl Froch vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Carl Froch is one of the biggest names to come out of British boxing in the current era. He has an impressive resume and holds the WBA and IBF super middleweight belts. He recently disposed of George Groves in a British super fight in May and now has his eyes set on a fight with Chavez Jr in Las Vegas.
Beating Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor, Arthur Abraham, Andre Dirrell and Jean Pascal in an illustrious career being a four-time world champion makes Froch a huge name in the super middleweight division.
The 28 year old Mexican has been fairly inactive in the past two years, fighting only once in 2013 and 2014. With a dispute with Top Rank being one of the reasons for this, a fight with Froch will elevate him back on the big stage. It has an exciting fight written all over it, as both men are not scared of getting involved in a toe-to-toe battle.
