Ogogo hopes for title fight later in the year
Ogogo hopes for title fight later in the year
Playing their part in Matchroom Boxing’s ‘Man of Steel’ show in Glasgow this Saturday, are former Team GB members Anthony Joshua, Golden Boy Promotions’ Anthony Ogogo and lightweight prospect Scotty Cardle. Ogogo (4-0-0, 2 knockouts) makes his 2014 debut following a year which saw a lot of hype surrounding the 2012 bronze medalist, and the 25-year old is raring to step back in the ring.
“I can’t wait!” Ogogo told Behind The Gloves. “Before I fought Dan Blackwell in December I unfortunately had to endure a lengthy spell out through injury after my fight with Gary Boulden in July and was out for nearly six months which was really frustrating, and so I am really looking forward to 2014. Getting the Blackwell fight under my belt helped shame off any cobwebs and I go into Saturday’s fight feeling fit and sharp. It’s going to be a big year for both me and British boxing as a whole.”
Anthony finished off last year, and will start off this year on a Matchroom show, an opportunity which he is deeply thankful for. He is grateful to be able to keep busy while awaiting his next opportunity to impress in the States, as previous injuries had ruled him out of those blockbuster shows:
“Absolutely. I’m really happy with the way Golden Boy have promoted me so far and if it wasn’t for injury and circumstances beyond my control, I would have fought a lot more by now.” said Ogogo.
“For instance, I was due to fight on the Mayweather-Canelo card in September but had to withdraw which was really frustrating. I’ve got a great relationship with Matchroom and Eddie Hearn has been great with me. I’ve also really enjoyed fighting on shows with my fellow Team GB Olympic team mates Anthony Joshua and Luke Campbell as well.”
Ogogo still got his chance to shine on American soil last year as he scored a unanimous decision win over Puerto Rican, Edgar Perez. We saw Ogogo play his part in a card headlined by Alexander-Purdy and co-featured Matthysse-Peterson and Shawn Porter. During the fight, the Brit showcased his abilities which not only impressed the large crowd, but caught the eye of Bernard Hopkins. Afterwards, the IBF light heavyweight champion offered to assist with Anthony’s training, a proposal which he plans to take Hopkins up on.
“It was a fantastic experience. To be able to go and fight out in Atlantic City in only my second pro fight was brilliant for me and I learnt so much from that fight. I was in and around some of the best fighters in the world and the experience taught me a lot. I thoroughly enjoyed it and after fighting on shows like that it makes you want more.”
“Bernard is a legend in the sport and anybody who would turn down the opportunity to take some time to train and learn with him would be a fool. He was very complimentary about me which was nice to hear but I think he also appreciated the amount of hard work and training I put in too. I was due to go and spend some time with him until my injury, but I still hope to do so at some point.”
As Ogogo mentioned, Sep. 14 was a frustrating night for him as he had to watch an action packed card which he was scheduled to be a part of.
“Of course it’s frustrating but I wouldn’t have done myself justice if I would have fought at only 60-70% fit. As hard as the decision was I knew I was doing the right thing and after speaking to Golden Boy I know I will get many more opportunities on these massive shows in the future which will be great for me.”
The youngster now aims to come through Saturday with another win on his record and hopes of a title fight later in the year.
“I want to have a really busy 2014 and by the end of the year be in a position to be fighting at title level in 12 round fights. I want to test myself against the best and can’t wait to start pushing on, starting with Saturday night.”
Ricky Burns’ world title defence against his mandatory Terence Crawford, will be broadcasted live on Sky Sports 2 from 7pm this Saturday. The weigh-in for the card will take place at Glasgow’s St Enoch Centre, this Friday from 1pm.
