Steve Cunningham outlasts Mansour, Curtis Stevens stops Johnson
On what was easily the best American fight card in 2014 thus far, heavyweight concert Steve Cunningham kept his career alive by outlasting unbeaten Amir Mansour to a ten round unanimous decision on Friday night on NBC Sports as promoted by Main Events. Cunningham climbed off the deck twice to earn a win by scores of 97-90, 95-92 twice.
In the co-feature, Curtis Stevens struggled against unbeaten Taureano Johnson before scoring a Hail Mary stoppage with a minute left in what was a phone booth war. Stevens was widely behind on the scorecards and pulled some late magic out of his hat, stopping Johnson in the tenth. The stoppage was questionable as Johnson should have been given the benefit of at least five more seconds. Still, a credible victory and showcasing of determination from Stevens, who usually fades after five rounds, along with his heavy punch.
