Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier II Competition Rolls on on Wednesday in Philadelphia and Baltimore
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (September 9, 2015) – Another day of action packed bouts took place in boxing rings in Baltimore and Philadelphia on Wednesday at the Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier II. The elite females competed in quarterfinal competition today while their male counterparts boxed in their final day of preliminary round action.
Baltimore boxer Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) impressed in front of her hometown crowd at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel, winning a TKO victory over Shmelle Baldwin (Wilmington, Del.) in their middleweight bout. Two former youth champions advanced in the middleweight division as well. 2014 Youth Olympian Martha Fabela (Oakland, Calif.) and two-time youth world championships medalist Iesha Kenney (Alexandria, Va.) both won unanimous decisions on Wednesday, defeating Jessica Bass (Stockbridge, Ga.) and Jennifer Barnes (Little Rock, Ark.) respectively.
Two former youth champions faced off in the lightweight division in Wednesday’s action. Former welterweight titlist Samantha Kinchen (Lexington, Ky.) successfully moved down to the lightweight division and she defeated 2013 youth champion Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) in today’s action.
Wednesday’s men’s action in Philadelphia featured several closely-contested bouts in seven weight divisions at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium. 2015 National Golden Gloves champion Jaron Ennis (Philadelphia, Pa.) thrilled his hometown fans with a first round TKO of Eric Chandler (Gloucester City, N.J.) in their light welterweight bout.
Two-time national champion Leshawn Rodriquez (Medford, N.Y.) recorded a TKO of his own in the middleweight division. Rodriquez stopped Angelo White Body (New Town, N.D.) in the first round of their preliminary bout to advance to the quarterfinals.
USA Boxing made a special presentation to the family of 1964 Olympic gold medalist and heavyweight world champion Joe Frazier during the evening session in Philadelphia, giving them a special letterman jacket honoring his appearance in the 1964 Olympic Games. A statue memorializing the Philadelphia icon is being unveiled at Xfinity Live on Saturday.
Women’s semifinal competition will begin at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel and all of the night’s victors will clinch berths in the Olympic Trials for Women’s Boxing.
Men’s quarterfinal competition will take place in two sessions at noon and 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium. The event in Philadelphia is being shown via live stream and it can be accessed by going to the Watch Live link at www.usaboxing.org.
The two finalists in the men’s event and top three finishers in the women’s events will earn berths in the 2016 Olympic Trials.
