Paulie Malignaggi has released a statement on his Instagram account stating an eye injury ruled him out of his May 29 fight with Danny O’Connor, although has vowed to return. Malignaggi stated that an elbow to the eye, which required stitches, was the cause of the pull out.
A WBA junior lightweight title bout between Javier Fortuna and Bryan Vazquez will replace the fight on the Premier Boxing Champions card on Spike telecast, which is headlined by Amir Khan vs. Chris Algieri.
Malignaggi stated via Instagram, “Just wanted to address my fans quickly. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to return to the ring on May 29th in Brooklyn. On Wednesday, I caught an elbow to the left eye while sparring and it opened up a deep gash that required immediate stitches.
I had to shut down my camp, and given how much I’ve had to dedicate to this camp while balancing several other responsibilities, it crushed me. I’m going to heal up and be back in the ring as soon as I can. This is the first time in my long pro career that I’ve had to pull out of a fight with an injury and it kills me. But trust me, I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Malignaggi last fought in April 2014 against Shawn Porter, losing in a fourth round stoppage. The Brooklyn man, who is well known for his in-depth boxing analysis and punditry, has battled with the likes of Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto.
