Under two weeks ago Billy Joe Saunders defeated Andy Lee to become the WBO middleweight champion and now it has been revealed a big money offer has been made by Gennady Golovkin and his team to set up a unification clash.
Golovkin, the IBF and WBA champion, comes off a win against David Lemieux and has targeted unification clashes in the middleweight division. A potential fight with WBC champion Saul Canelo Alvarez is touted for the end of the year and now it seems a fight with Saunders is targeted for this spring.
Frank Warren confirmed the offer to Daily Mail and while Saunders has stated he is not ready for a Golovkin fight yet, Warren admitted such a lucrative offer could turn his head towards the showdown.
“We have been in communication with Gennady Golovkin’s people who have approached us with a firm offer of a unification fight,” Warren said to Daily Mail.
“I know Billy Joe has intimated he may not be quite ready for this but money talks louder than anything in boxing and such are the sums involved it is one worth considering.
“We will be sitting down to talk about the future with Billy Joe once he has enjoyed his break. He has some tasty options out there and whatever happens we will come up with something really special.”
Team Golovkin stated to World Boxing News that a big offer was made to Saunders last week, although manager Oleg Hermann was pessimistic, stating he does not believe that Hatfield resident will take up the offer.
“We made a big offer to Billy Joe Saunders one week ago, but I don’t think he will take this challenge against GGG,” manager Oleg Hermann exclusively told World Boxing News.
“We made a big offer to him and he cannot say it’s not fair.”
Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter, also confirmed that their team has received no response thus far.
