Ahmet Patterson defeated Chad Gaynor in the fifth round to win the English Welterweight title at the Ice Sheffield arena. The event named ‘In the Line of Fire’ which was promoted by Coldwell Boxing. was the Matchroom Fightpass’ first streamed event which saw an entertaining bout between two highly rated English welterweight prospects. The fight was stopped by the referee in the fifth round, after consultation with the doctor, as Chad Gaynor’s eye had completely closed.

It was evident from the outset that Patterson was going to use his jab as his main weapon and during the course of the night this proved to be the case. The first round saw Gaynor attempting with some thumping hooks, catching Patterson with a body shot. Later on in the round, Patterson broke Gaynor’s defence with snappy jabs, which would be one of Gaynor’s struggles during the bout. His defense failed to stop the quick jabs, yet Patterson kept his defense tight to avoid any of Gaynor’s power shots landing.

Patterson started picking up the pace in the second, masterfully slipping Gaynor’s jab and landing a left hook. He provided another left hook which later would contribute to Gaynor’s closed eye. Throughout the round it was evident that Gaynor was looking to counter Patterson’s jab with an overhead right, which proved to be ineffective as many of his punches failed to hit their target.

The third round provided a closer round with both men connecting with a left hook yet the fourth round started out at frantic pace. Patterson who illustrated the cleaner work in the previous rounds seem to sense blood and came into the round throwing more hooks yet utilising the jab as his main type of arsenal. His punch accuracy was impressive and his increase in pressure with the combination of connecting left hooks and jabs, resulted in Gaynor’s nose to bleed and swelling under Gaynor’s right eye.

The fifth, and what proved to be the final round, saw Gaynor clearly struggling with vision through the right eye as Patterson increased his punishment to Gaynor’s face with his jabs and left hooks connecting once again. During the round, the referee stopped the fight to consult with the referee with concerns about Gaynor’s eye. After it was agreed to carry on, Patterson’s punching accuracy once again forced the referee to stop the round after Gaynor’s eye seemed to have completely shut. This second time round the doctor stopped the fight with Chad Gaynor in no position to carry of fighting.

This will be a big blow to Gaynor, who is regarded as a highly rated boxer. Only before this fight, Frankie Gavin and Tony Bellew both had a huge amount of praise for Gaynor. After suffering this defeat, it will be intriguing how this young boxer bounces back.

Don’t take anything away from Ahmet Patterson, this was an impressive performance. He provided a high level of snappy jabs throughout the fight, had an aggressive defence and provided a high level of punch accuracy. He picked his punches throughout the fight precisely and disposed of his tough challenger in a convincing style.

Earlier on Serge Ambomo beat Jerome Wilson with a brutal right hook in the fifth round to end the tie. Cameroonian Ambomo, who posseses a rugged aggressive style, came to fight against Wilson and he conveyed his power after knocking down Wilson in the second round.

The fifth round saw a powerful right hook connect with Wilson out cold, yet Ambomo theatrically seemed to kneel over and kiss Wilson on the head. With the fight being stopped after such a severe hook, Ambomo’s win was masked by his unprofessional antic which caused promoter David Coldwell to confront the Cameroonian. The fighter also left the ring with the crowds boo’s echoing in the arena.

Steve Williams ready for Italian job http://behindthegloves.com/news/steve-williams-ready-for-italian-job/ http://behindthegloves.com/news/steve-williams-ready-for-italian-job/#comments Tue, 15 Jul 2014 22:12:20 +0000 http://behindthegloves.com/?p=7952

Steve Williams ready for Italian job

After making a long-awaited return to the ring with two quick appearances in May and June, Wallasey’s Steve Williams once again finds himself in title class as he travels to Italy to face local favourite, Luca Giacon, for the vacant WBA Continental light-welterweight title this Saturday. Williams’ belt dream seemed unlikely when he participated in a routine four rounder less than two months ago but manager, Dave Coldwell, has landed the unlikely shot for his man and Williams’ trainer, Danny Kelly, is confident that his charge will break Italian hearts this weekend.

“This is a shot that the team wasn’t expecting for Stevie but it’s one that we expect him to grab with both hands,” revealed Kelly. “He’s proven before this fight that he’s more than capable of going the championship distance at a good pace and we believe that puts him in a good position to come away with the win on Saturday night. We’ve got no problem travelling for the shot and we’re grateful to Dave Coldwell for getting Stevie this chance. He’s looked great in the gym throughout the build-up and he’ll be returning to Merseyside with a new belt and a good ranking in the WBA.”

Williams’ journey to the Italian town of Casteggio is one that has provided more successes than disappointments but it’s the latter emotion that his given “The Wallasey Express” the added motivation to ensure that Saturday doesn’t end the same way previous title tilts against Lenny Daws and Darren Hamilton did as Williams fell short on both occasions. Kelly believes that the experience has made his man a better fighter and that will be evident once the first bell goes.

“Stevie is hungry for this because he knows what it feels like to miss out on great opportunities. Everything in this camp has gone really well and that includes everything from diet to sparring. He’s looking in the best shape I’ve ever seen him and that’s down to all the hard work he’s doing. He’s been working closely with Darren Campbell and Kevin Walker who’ve both made sure he’s done the weight correctly so we know we’ve taken care of every single minor detail. The hard work has been done so now he has to just put in one more big effort and the belt will be his.”

David Coldwell: Tony Bellew showing quality progress http://behindthegloves.com/news/david-coldwell-tony-bellew-showing-quality-progress/ http://behindthegloves.com/news/david-coldwell-tony-bellew-showing-quality-progress/#comments Fri, 27 Jun 2014 19:48:00 +0000 http://behindthegloves.com/?p=7548

David Coldwell: Tony Bellew showing quality progress

Despite the ignorance of a few ignorant boxing fans, Sheffield’s Dave Coldwell is a boxing trainer. In fact, he’s a very good one. A bulging client list that once included Sheffield pair, Ryan Rhodes and Kell Brook, Coldwell’s window for preparation opportunities has been a small one in recent times with the Yorkshire man dedicating a vast amount of his hectic schedule to promoting and managing. When Liverpool’s Tony Bellew made the call to Coldwell’s busy line enquiring whether he’d like to put the pads back on, the man who played a part in George Groves’ phenomenal rise had no doubts about what his answer would be.

“I’ll be honest, I had no intention of training fighters once the promotional stuff got serious,” revealed Coldwell. “I was missing it a lot but the speed at which Coldwell Boxing took off made me prioritise that but I always told myself that a special chance would be enough to get me back in the gym and Tony is that chance. We’ve known each other a long time, a really long time, and our ideas on boxing are very similar. When he came to me, I didn’t need to be asked twice and so far it’s been a decision that I’m glad I made.”

Bellew’s decision to join forces with Coldwell arose following a successful stint with former amateur coach, Mick McAllister, which ended amicably shortly before the Everton fanatic’s cruiserweight bow against Valery Brudov in spring. That was Coldwell’s first night assisting Bellew and he’ll also be the man given the task of arranging the strategy to defeat Nathan Cleverly, who Bellew will inevitably face before the year’s end. First up for “Bomber” is Brazilian puncher, Julio Cesar Dos Santos, at the Liverpool Echo Arena on July 12th and Coldwell is excited about watching his man’s gym form be transferred to the zone that most matters.

“Tony has made a great start in getting where I want him to be and every single day he’s showing quality progress. His hunger and will to win is like nothing I’ve ever seen and as long as he keeps showing the same commitment then there’s no way he can be denied from getting everything he wants out of this sport. We’re both looking forward to July 12th as it’s a chance for Tony to show everyone what we’ve been working on and when we come through that then we’re onto the big one, Bellew v Cleverly. That’s the one Tony wants, it’s the one I want and I’m sure it’s the one that every boxing fan wants.”

Stevie Williams returns June 21 in Manchester http://behindthegloves.com/news/stevie-williams-returns-june-21-in-manchester/ http://behindthegloves.com/news/stevie-williams-returns-june-21-in-manchester/#comments Sat, 07 Jun 2014 07:00:17 +0000 http://behindthegloves.com/?p=7217 Stevie Williams returns June 21 in Manchester

Last month’s Coldwell Boxing event at Deeside marked a successful return to the ring for “The Wallasey Express,” Stevie Williams. After making a failed attempt to wrestle the Lonsdale belt from Bristol’s Darren Hamilton early last year, Williams has endured a turbulent a barren spell that has saw the Merseyside man endure several injuries. Now fully healed, Williams is ready to be thrown straight back into title contention and new manager, Dave Coldwell, believes his man has what it takes.

“I was impressed by Stevie and the way about he went about his business,” buzzed Coldwell. “He was in there with Kevin Macaulay (WPTS4) and Kevin is a tough guy who knows his way around the ring but Stevie was still able to drop him in the opener. The vital thing was getting Stevie some much needed rounds because he’s had a lengthy spell out so it was important that he shook some ring rust off and was able to feel himself again. He’s a tough lad with plenty of hunger so I know what to expect from him. It’s just about getting him back into that fighting groove and then we can move from there.”

Next up for Williams is another outing on Coldwell Boxing’s “Feel the Noise” which lands at Manchester’s Bowlers Exhibition Centre on June 21st. Williams will participate in another contest as he works his way back into the valuable rankings of the national 140lbs division.

“There’s no rush with Stevie but he’s certainly someone who we want to see fulfilling his potential because he’s a title level fighter already. The last year has been a hard time for Stevie and that’s why I can’t rush him just yet but I’m very tempted to get him in for some sort of title because I know he wouldn’t let anyone down. We’ll have another look at him on June 21st then hopefully we can start taking bigger strides with him.”

Coldwell Boxing proudly presents “Feel the Noise” on June 21st at the Manchester Bowlers Exhibition Centre. Some of the finest Northwest talent including two time British title challenger, Stevie Williams, and red hot Macclesfield prospect, Liam Hanrahan, will be in action. Tickets are available from WWW.COLDWELLBOXING.COM and the event will be shown live in its entirety on the excellent Coldwell Television App.

Steve Williams returns May 24 http://behindthegloves.com/news/steve-williams-returns-may-24/ http://behindthegloves.com/news/steve-williams-returns-may-24/#comments Wed, 30 Apr 2014 14:02:08 +0000 http://behindthegloves.com/?p=6417 Steve Williams returns May 24

Wallasey’s Steve Williams makes his long-awaited return to the ring on May 24th at Deeside Leisure Centre when he takes the first step on the journey that he hopes will see him find a place in the upper echelon of the domestic light welterweight scene. With Dave Coldwell now part of Williams’ team in a managerial role, the former English champion at 10st is hoping that the head of Coldwell Boxing can deliver him the national glory that has twice evaded his capture.

Back in 2010, Williams travelled to London to face Lenny Daws who was British champion at the time. Despite a gutsy effort inside a roasting York Hall, Williams remained on his stool at the end of round 10, and could only take plaudits for bravery as a small consolation prize. Three years later, Williams got another shot at the Lonsdale crown but his efforts were thwarted by Bristol’s Darren Hamilton, who always seemed to be one step ahead throughout the contest. With a long break behind due to injury, Williams is raring to go and is eyeing title opportunities early into his comeback.

“After speaking with Dave, we both agree that I’m only two or three fights away from being back in title contention,” revealed Williams. “Dave’s putting quite a few shows on so there’ll be no problem with me staying busy for the next couple of fights and then it’s all about getting a chance as soon as I can get one. I’ve had a couple of injuries over the last year so I’ve not had the chance to move on with my career but everything is in place now so I’m looking forward to getting back into the ring.”

Coldwell added about his new charge, “I’m delighted to be working with Stevie because I think he’s only a fight or two away from fighting for titles. He’s a quiet kid who does his talking in the ring and he has the entertaining style that Coldwell Boxing is always eager to promote. There are good fights out there for Stevie and I’ll be doing my best to get him the right ones and hopefully deliver him the honours that I know he desperately craves.”

Maxi Hughes ready for Joseph Laryea http://behindthegloves.com/news/maxi-hughes-ready-for-joseph-laryea/ http://behindthegloves.com/news/maxi-hughes-ready-for-joseph-laryea/#comments Tue, 22 Apr 2014 15:56:55 +0000 http://behindthegloves.com/?p=6050

Maxi Hughes ready for Joseph Laryea

The faith that thriving promoter, Dave Coldwell, has in his young charge, Maxi Hughes, will be exhibited in abundance on May 9th as the Yorkshire youngster tackles former world title challenger, Joseph Laryea, over 10 rounds for the vacant super-featherweight International Masters title at Ice Sheffield. Hughes’ move to South Wales to be a part of Gary Lockett’s successful stable has paid handsomely thus far and the Rossington prospect is hopeful that an impressive victory over the hard-hitting Ghanaian will pave the way for future belt opportunities.

“I’m well aware how much of a threat Laryea is but with risk comes reward and this is a fight that can put me on the map,” said Hughes. “There are big opportunities in the super featherweight division and myself and Dave have sat down and looked at a number of scenarios that could material once this is out the way. This fight is all about proving that I have what it takes to move up another level and I’ll prove it in style on May 9th.”

Hughes’ journey to his breakthrough fight with the well-travelled African has been a consistently smooth one with a 2013 points loss to Blackpool protégé, Scotty Cardle, being the only setback on his ledger. Since that defeat just over a year ago, Hughes has made adjustments in preparation that have seen him join up with Lockett and also head a division south. With everything seemingly in place for an assault on the domestic league, Hughes is confident that the changes he has made will set up a successful future.

“Even though the Cardle fight never went to plan, there were still a load of positives that I took from that fight. It was good exposure for me and I went the distance with a top kid and learnt an awful lot from it. Since then, I’ve moved a few bits of stuff around and everything is going perfect at the moment. Dave is getting me the right fights, Gary is bringing me on loads, so now it’s down to me to get in there and repay my team for the effort they’re putting into me.”

Mansouri mauls Mallin http://behindthegloves.com/news/mansouri-mauls-mallin/ http://behindthegloves.com/news/mansouri-mauls-mallin/#comments Fri, 07 Feb 2014 23:11:00 +0000 http://behindthegloves.com/?p=4722

Mansouri mauls Mallin

A sell out crowd at the Ice Sheffield arena saw Navid Mansouri put in a career best performance to knockout Matthew Mallin in the fifth round to successfully defend his English light middleweight title.

On a terrific domestic card staged by British promoter, Dave Coldwell, Rotherham based Mansouri (13-1-2, 4 knockouts) was in control throughout, putting Mallin (9-2-1) down in the third before trapping his man on the ropes in the fifth to end the fight in brutal fashion.

The anticipated rematch after the first encounter ended in a technical following a head clash began with a tentative opening round, only for Mansouri to step on the gas in the second landing a series of clean head shots. Referee, Steve Gray, took a long hard look at Mallin who on unsteady legs managed to stumble back to his corner and see out the round.

Into the third and Mansouri was displaying terrific head movement and countering Mallin at will, before an accumulation of huge and accurate punches had Mallin down with 20 seconds left of the round. Bravely beating the count Mallin again made it back to his stool but it looked a matter of time before the fight would be stopped.

To his credit, Mallin would not give in and did land his own single shots but it wasn’t enough to deter Mansouri and the fourth continued in the same pattern. Mansoori persisted to land huge punches and the referee again looked to move in and stop the fight, before it came to a natural conclusion in the fifth with Mansouri registering his thirteenth career victory and fourth knockout.

It’s back to the drawing board for Barnsley’s Matthew Mallin whilst Mansouri will now be targeting the British title, currently held by Liam Smith.

The chief support saw a local derby as Lee Noble (17-24-3, 3 KOs) from Barnsley beat the previously undefeated Dave Fidler (7-1-2, 3 KOs) of Sheffield by decision 97-94, to win the International Masters light-middleweight title.

In a cracking fight Noble came out strong in the opening round landing right hands down the middle and looking noticeably the bigger man. Fidler who at 35-years-old has arguably seen his best years, hit the canvas in the second, as Noble’s right hands were timed well and proving concussive.

The third and fourth rounds saw much of the same, Noble’s rhythm was working well and he was seemingly in cruise control only for Fidler to end the fourth with a burst of punches and over the next few rounds work his way back into the fight.

Fidler trained by former British and European champion, Ryan Rhodes, tried to push the 26-year-old Noble back and force the pace, proving effective at times only for Noble to land right hands which established itself as the telling punch of the fight.

A superb last round saw Fidler pouring forward trying to score the knockout but was rattled by Noble on more than one occasion. Both fighters received huge applause from the crowd as they showed great respect for each after the fight, with Noble claiming the decision.

Maxi Hughes (11-1-1, 1 KO) claimed his first career stoppage beating Hungarian, Imre Nagy (8-4), with a third round onslaught causing referee Howard Foster to stop the fight. Performing at super featherweight for the first time after moving down from lightweight, southpaw Hughes has been sparring with Gavin Rees and Lee Selby whilst working with Welsh trainer Gary Lockett. His only career defeat came at the hands of Scotty Cardle last year at lightweight and he will be targeting a shot at the British title this year.

“There’s only one Jamie Hughes” chanted his fans as he made his ring entrance to take on local Sheffield fighter Lee Duncan (5-8-2). Light heavyweight, Hughes (5-0, 1 KO), won the bout on points 49-46 after it was stopped in the fifth round following an accidental clash of heads leaving Hughes badly cut. Frustrated early by the awkward Duncan, Hughes had started to take over from the third round after utilizing his jab and the fight looked as though it would continue in that vein.

Haroon Khan (4-0, 1 KO), the younger brother of former World Champion Amir Khan cruised to a 40-36 win, beating Francis Croes (1-22, 1 KO) in a super flyweight bout. Commonwealth Games Bronze medalist, Khan, showed a similar style to that of his elder brother with speed and movement and is targeting the English title this year.

Rod Smith (6-0, 2 KOs) hit the canvas in the first round only to rally to beat the durable Max Maxwell (16-36-3, 3 KOs) over six rounds at middleweight to win 59-55. Smith came into the fight following an impressive win over Liam Cameron in December and is looking to step up his sparring to prepare for sterner tests down the line.

Atif Shafiq (9-0, 1 KO) from the famous Ingle gym in Sheffield, extended his unbeaten record against tough Latvian, Pavels Senkovs (4-68-5, 3 KOs) who has only ever been stopped on cuts, with a unanimous points win over four rounds. Campaigning at lightweight, the Rotherham born fighter Shafiq is still a baby in boxing terms at only 20-years-old but will be looking to add power to his impressive technical ability in the future.

Welterweight Ryan Fields (2-1) of Derbyshire beat veteran journeyman Carl Allen (19-112-7, 5 KOs) with a convincing points victory to win 40-36. At just 21-years-old, Fields showed he is developing good power during the bout and is expected to return to the ring in March.

The boxing fans of Yorkshire went home happy after being treated to another great evening of entertainment from the ever growing promotional stable of promoter Dave Coldwell and Coldwell Promotions.
