Ahmet Patterson defeated Chad Gaynor in the fifth round to win the English Welterweight title at the Ice Sheffield arena. The event named ‘In the Line of Fire’ which was promoted by Coldwell Boxing. was the Matchroom Fightpass’ first streamed event which saw an entertaining bout between two highly rated English welterweight prospects. The fight was stopped by the referee in the fifth round, after consultation with the doctor, as Chad Gaynor’s eye had completely closed.

It was evident from the outset that Patterson was going to use his jab as his main weapon and during the course of the night this proved to be the case. The first round saw Gaynor attempting with some thumping hooks, catching Patterson with a body shot. Later on in the round, Patterson broke Gaynor’s defence with snappy jabs, which would be one of Gaynor’s struggles during the bout. His defense failed to stop the quick jabs, yet Patterson kept his defense tight to avoid any of Gaynor’s power shots landing.

Patterson started picking up the pace in the second, masterfully slipping Gaynor’s jab and landing a left hook. He provided another left hook which later would contribute to Gaynor’s closed eye. Throughout the round it was evident that Gaynor was looking to counter Patterson’s jab with an overhead right, which proved to be ineffective as many of his punches failed to hit their target.

The third round provided a closer round with both men connecting with a left hook yet the fourth round started out at frantic pace. Patterson who illustrated the cleaner work in the previous rounds seem to sense blood and came into the round throwing more hooks yet utilising the jab as his main type of arsenal. His punch accuracy was impressive and his increase in pressure with the combination of connecting left hooks and jabs, resulted in Gaynor’s nose to bleed and swelling under Gaynor’s right eye.

The fifth, and what proved to be the final round, saw Gaynor clearly struggling with vision through the right eye as Patterson increased his punishment to Gaynor’s face with his jabs and left hooks connecting once again. During the round, the referee stopped the fight to consult with the referee with concerns about Gaynor’s eye. After it was agreed to carry on, Patterson’s punching accuracy once again forced the referee to stop the round after Gaynor’s eye seemed to have completely shut. This second time round the doctor stopped the fight with Chad Gaynor in no position to carry of fighting.

This will be a big blow to Gaynor, who is regarded as a highly rated boxer. Only before this fight, Frankie Gavin and Tony Bellew both had a huge amount of praise for Gaynor. After suffering this defeat, it will be intriguing how this young boxer bounces back.

Don’t take anything away from Ahmet Patterson, this was an impressive performance. He provided a high level of snappy jabs throughout the fight, had an aggressive defence and provided a high level of punch accuracy. He picked his punches throughout the fight precisely and disposed of his tough challenger in a convincing style.

Earlier on Serge Ambomo beat Jerome Wilson with a brutal right hook in the fifth round to end the tie. Cameroonian Ambomo, who posseses a rugged aggressive style, came to fight against Wilson and he conveyed his power after knocking down Wilson in the second round.

The fifth round saw a powerful right hook connect with Wilson out cold, yet Ambomo theatrically seemed to kneel over and kiss Wilson on the head. With the fight being stopped after such a severe hook, Ambomo’s win was masked by his unprofessional antic which caused promoter David Coldwell to confront the Cameroonian. The fighter also left the ring with the crowds boo’s echoing in the arena.
