Welcome To Behind The Gloves

Top 3 underrated fighters

Mikey Garcia

In an era where unfortunately we are restricted from seeing the best fighting the best due to boxing politics, there are a number of fighters who few want to face who we can all name.

There are fighters who don’t get the deserved attention due to them not having a big fan base or simply they are boxing in what is perceived to be an unglamorous weight-class. I want to draw your attention to these guys and if you are not familiar with them watch some of their fights and appreciate just how talented they really are.

Roman Gonzalez

Flyweight Gonzalez (39-0: 33 KO’s) is overlooked as his division is not perceived as mainstream. Make no mistake El Chocolatito is a demon. The 27 yr old won the WBA Minimumweight title in 2008 scoring a 4th round TKO of Yutaka Nilda.

He went on to win the WBA Interim Flyweight title in 2010 and next up is a unification match against Japan’s Akira Yaegashi for the WBC & Ring belts on September 5.

Mikey Garcia

Super-Featherweight Garcia, 26; (34-0: 28 KO’s) for me is one of the most exciting boxers in the world currently. His victory over Roman Martinez in particular last year was a master-class. The 2-weight world champion has been an unfortunate victim of inactivity this year due to a legal dispute with promoter Top Rank. Garcia believes he is out of contract, Top Rank believe he is under it and from various articles I’ve read we are slowly but surely reaching a conclusion.

It’s a huge disappoint as the pressure fighter was expecting to be fighting at least 4 times this year.  A move up to 140lbs is logical due to his growing frame with WBA Lightweight champion Terence Crawford intending to move up a square off between both has Fight Of The Year written all over it.

Yoan Hernandez

Cuban Cruiserweight Hernandez, 29; (28-1: 14KO’s) his whole career in Germany as the Cruiserweight division is deemed as a bridesmaid to the Heavyweight scene Stateside.

Not to be deterred by that the “Iron Man” has held the IBF title since October 2011 scoring notable victories over Steve Cunningham twice and a 10 round KO over Alexander Alekseev  November last year.

The 29 yr old faces Firat Arslan this forthcoming Saturday in what should be a good old fashioned slug-fest. Arslan a former world champion does have his best days behind him but he is fully capable of turning up on the night and surprising.

A future fight against WBO champion Marco Huck is the one we are itching to see.
