Meet Undefeated Jr. Welterweight Nick “King Beamen” Givhan
Confidence? Check. Charisma? Check. Good looks? Check that too. Add skill, heart, and determination and you’ve got Nick “King Beamen” Givhan- undefeated junior welterweight, of Kalamazoo, Michigan. At 27, Nick is 7-0 with each of his wins coming by knockout. The passion and dedication to his sport are evident in the routine he maintains daily to perfect his craft.
“I work from 5 AM to 5 PM at a moving company,” Nick said. “I get up at 4:30 AM, jog 2 miles, go to work until 5. I rest until about 6, and then it’s back in the gym. Basic workout until 6:30-9, jog 5 miles. “It wasn’t easy at first,” Nick admitted, “but I adapted. This is 7 days a week. I don’t believe in days off.” Nick paces himself to avoid burn out, and insists Sunday is a light day, with cardio only, but what drives his training is his competition’s work rate. “I feel like my opponent is doing that much more, so that motivates me to grind.”
Prior to boxing, Nick excelled in football, and had six amateur cage titles in the short span of eight and a half months, and his over the top personality and style in each sport is where he came up with the ring name “King Beamen.” “Yeah,” Nick laughed. “My brother said I had a lot of swag playing football, like the movie “Any Given Sunday”, and when I fought cage, I had the six titles, and I demanded to be called King Beamen, so it was born.”
So far, “King Beamen” has ruled Michigan, but he and his team, which consists of trainer/manager Terrence Thompson and Houston, Texas based promoter Baby Bull Promotions are planning on broadening his horizons, “We’re just waiting for the right opportunities, and to fight through boxing politics,” Nick said. “Our goal is to finish the year 10-0.”
Boxing politics can be one of the drawbacks of the sport, and discourage even the most thick-skinned fighter, but Nick remains positive. His favorite thing about the sport is inspiring others, and he insists he’s motivated by even the harshest of critics. “Haters inspire me,” Nick said. “When you start being successful, at a craft, you talk to 1000 people, 1000 turns to 100 and 100 turn to 10 the more successful you get. I like to prove people WRONG. I like to let them know with big ego and big mouth also comes BIG talent and big skills.”
Big talent and big skills are what drives Nick’s weight division, and he is quick to share his impressions of his peers:
Zab Judah? “Beatable.”
Karim Mayfield? “Motivated.”
Hank Lundy? “World champ.”
Brandon Rios? “TOUGH.”
Danny Garcia? “Wow! Speechless. Danny is a tough dude.”
As Nick sets his sights on conquering the talent in the junior welter class, he’s quick to acknowledge all the support he receives. “My trainer and manager Terrence, and my promoter, Baby Bull. ALL the people who have supported me- people buying shirts, hats, everyone in my community. Team Beamen is a movement,” he said. “And we’re on our way.”
